Returning to the Estates Theatre is the extraordinarily successful “ice-hockey” opera Nagano, which had its world premiere at the National Theatre back in 2004. Its authors are Martin Smolka, a leading Czech composer, and the popular theatre-maker and actor Jaroslav Dušek. They chose as the theme of their opera the journey of the Czech national ice-hockey team towards the Olympic gold in Nagano in 1998. The singular, unprecedented and witty combination of the national sport and the National Theatre Opera met with a tremendous response on the part of the audience.
